What Is Public Housing and Who Qualifies?

Public housing is government-owned rental housing managed by local Public Housing Authorities. Rent is based on your income — typically 30% of your adjusted monthly income. Units range from single rooms to family-sized apartments in both urban and suburban areas.

To qualify, your income must generally fall below 80% of the Area Median Income. Priority is given to those below 30% AMI, families with children, elderly, and people with disabilities. Apply to multiple PHAs to improve your chances.
