What Is CHIP and Who Qualifies in 2026?
CHIP provides low-cost comprehensive health coverage to children in families with incomes too high for Medicaid but who can't afford private insurance. Most states cover children in families earning up to 200–300% FPL. Premiums are low or free.
CHIP covers doctor visits, hospital stays, immunizations, prescriptions, dental, and vision care. Many states also cover postpartum care for mothers. Children up to age 19 may qualify. In most states, you apply for CHIP and Medicaid through the same application.
