Food Assistance in 2026 — What's Changed and What to Know

2026 brought meaningful updates to food assistance programs across the country. SNAP benefit amounts were recalculated based on the updated Thrifty Food Plan, resulting in higher maximum allotments for most household sizes. Income eligibility thresholds also increased, meaning households that were previously just over the limit may now qualify. If you were denied SNAP in the past year, it's worth reapplying with your current household information.

WIC expanded its approved food list to include more culturally relevant options and increased the cash value benefit for fruits and vegetables. Meanwhile, the National School Lunch Program extended free meal eligibility to additional students through Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) expansion. As of 2026, EBT cardholders can use benefits for online grocery delivery through Amazon Fresh, Walmart, and Instacart in all 50 states.
