How Food Banks Work — What to Know Before You Go
Food banks collect and distribute donated and purchased food to local pantries, soup kitchens, and meal programs. The Feeding America network includes over 200 food banks and 60,000 partner agencies nationwide. Most don't require proof of income.
In addition to dry goods, many pantries now offer fresh produce, dairy, meat, and culturally specific foods. SNAP recipients can also shop at participating farmers markets using their EBT card — often with match programs that double food dollars.
