Phone & Internet Assistance in 2026 — Lifeline Continues, ACP Ended
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended in June 2024 after funding ran out. Lifeline remains active and continues to provide a monthly discount on phone and internet service. Several states have launched their own broadband assistance programs to help fill the gap left by ACP.

Lifeline — What It Is and Who It Helps in 2026

Lifeline is a federal program managed by the FCC that provides a monthly discount of up to $9.25 on phone or broadband internet service for qualifying low-income households. On Tribal lands, the benefit increases to $34.25 per month. For most eligible households, the discount covers the full cost of a basic cell phone plan with talk, text, and data — effectively making phone service free.

To qualify, your household income must be at or below 135% of the federal poverty level, or you must participate in a qualifying federal assistance program such as SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or federal public housing assistance. Only one Lifeline discount is allowed per household — not per person — and you must recertify annually to keep your benefit.

Since the ACP ended in 2024, Lifeline is now the primary federal program for reducing phone and internet costs. If you enrolled in ACP and lost that benefit, Lifeline is the most direct replacement, though the discount amount is smaller. Some states — including California, New York, and Texas — have state-level broadband programs that may stack with or supplement Lifeline.

How to Get a Free Government Phone in 2026

1
Confirm You Qualify
Check whether your household income is at or below 135% of the federal poverty level, or whether you already participate in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or another qualifying program. If you're not sure, our Lifeline Program Finder can walk you through it in about 2 minutes.

2
Choose a Participating Provider
Lifeline is offered through approved providers, not directly by the government. Providers vary by state and by what they include in the plan — some offer unlimited talk and text with a small data allowance, while others offer plans with more data. Compare plans in your state to find the best fit.

3
Apply Online or Through Your Provider
You can apply through the National Verifier at LifelineSupport.org, or directly through your chosen provider's website. Most applications are completed online in under 10 minutes. You'll need to provide proof of eligibility — a benefits letter, recent pay stub, or tax return — and a government-issued ID. Approval is often instant.
4
Activate Your Service or Apply the Discount
If you're getting a new phone through the program, your provider will send a free device and activate the plan. If you're applying the discount to an existing phone or plan you already have, simply notify your current provider once you're approved and the discount will be applied to your monthly bill going forward.
5
Recertify Every Year
Lifeline requires annual recertification to confirm you still qualify. You'll receive a notice by email, mail, or text when it's time to recertify. The process takes only a few minutes at LifelineSupport.org. Failing to recertify will result in your benefit being cancelled, though you can re-enroll at any time if you still meet the requirements.
