SNAP Renewal Timeline

SNAP certification periods: 6–12 months for most households; 24 months for elderly/disabled households with fixed income in many states. Your state sends a renewal notice 30–45 days before expiration. Respond immediately — delays can cause a gap in benefits. If you miss the deadline, reapply immediately; don't wait.

Medicaid Renewal Timeline

Annual renewal (redetermination). Your state attempts ex parte renewal using electronic records — if successful, no action needed. If you receive a renewal form, respond within the specified deadline (typically 30–90 days). Mark your coverage anniversary date and set a reminder 60 days before. See Medicaid Renewal Guide.

Section 8 Annual Recertification

Section 8 requires annual recertification — reporting income and household changes to maintain your voucher. Your PHA sends notice 60–90 days before your anniversary. Miss it and your voucher can be terminated. Update your contact information with your PHA any time it changes.

LIHEAP Application Window

LIHEAP is not a continuous benefit — you must apply each year during the program window. Most states open heating assistance in September–November; cooling assistance in March–May. Set a reminder in August each year to check your state's opening date and apply immediately. See LIHEAP Deadlines by State.

CHIP Renewal

Annual renewal for CHIP follows the same process as Medicaid — ex parte when possible, renewal form when not. Respond promptly. Children can lose CHIP coverage for purely administrative reasons if renewal notices go unanswered.

SSI Redetermination and CDR

SSI undergoes periodic redetermination (income/resource review, typically every 1–3 years) and Continuing Disability Reviews (CDR, typically every 3–7 years). SSA sends notice when each is due — respond promptly and provide complete information. Missing a redetermination can result in benefit suspension.
