Documents Required for SNAP

Having all your documents ready before you apply prevents delays and back-and-forth with your caseworker. Here is everything you need:

Identity & Residency

  • Photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
  • Social Security numbers for all household members
  • Proof of address (utility bill, lease, or bank statement)
  • Birth certificates for children

Income & Employment

  • Pay stubs from the last 30 days (all jobs)
  • Benefit award letters (Social Security, disability, unemployment)
  • Child support documentation
  • Self-employment records if applicable

Expenses

  • Current rent or mortgage statement
  • Utility bills (electricity, gas, water, phone)
  • Childcare receipts if applicable
  • Medical expense receipts (for elderly or disabled household members)

Tips

Digital copies are accepted for online applications in most states. Apply as soon as possible — SNAP benefits are not retroactive before your application date.
