Having all your documents ready before you apply prevents delays and back-and-forth with your caseworker. Here is everything you need:
Identity & Residency
- Photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
- Social Security numbers for all household members
- Proof of address (utility bill, lease, or bank statement)
- Birth certificates for children
Income & Employment
- Pay stubs from the last 30 days (all jobs)
- Benefit award letters (Social Security, disability, unemployment)
- Child support documentation
- Self-employment records if applicable
Expenses
- Current rent or mortgage statement
- Utility bills (electricity, gas, water, phone)
- Childcare receipts if applicable
- Medical expense receipts (for elderly or disabled household members)
Tips
Digital copies are accepted for online applications in most states. Apply as soon as possible — SNAP benefits are not retroactive before your application date.
