Documents Required for LIHEAP
Apply through your local Community Action Agency. Call 211 to find your nearest provider. Apply early — LIHEAP funds run out quickly each season.
Identity & Residency
- Photo ID for the head of household
- Social Security numbers for all household members
- Proof of address (utility bill or lease)
Income
- Pay stubs or benefit award letters for all income sources
- Most recent tax return if self-employed
Energy Accounts
- Most recent heating or cooling utility bill
- Account number for your energy provider
- Shutoff notice (if applying for crisis assistance)
Tips
If you receive SNAP, SSI, or TANF, you are automatically income-eligible for LIHEAP in most states and may need fewer documents. Mention this when you apply.
