CHIP Dental — What's Included
CHIP dental coverage for children is comprehensive by design. All states provide dental as part of the CHIP benefit package, and the EPSDT standard applies — any medically necessary dental treatment identified in a screening must be provided. Covered services typically include:
- Routine preventive care: cleanings twice a year, dental exams, X-rays, fluoride treatments, dental sealants
- Restorative care: fillings (composite and amalgam), tooth extractions, crowns for damaged teeth
- Emergency dental care for acute pain or injury
- Referrals to pediatric dental specialists when needed
The EPSDT guarantee is important — if a dental screening identifies a need, coverage cannot be denied simply because the specific treatment isn't explicitly listed in the state's benefit package.
CHIP Vision — What's Included
CHIP vision coverage includes: annual comprehensive eye examination, prescription eyeglasses (frames and lenses) when medically necessary, contact lenses when medically necessary (some states require specific medical justification), and referrals to pediatric ophthalmologists and optometrists as needed. Most states cover one eye exam and one pair of glasses per year; some cover replacement if glasses are lost or damaged.
Finding a CHIP Dentist
To find dentists who accept CHIP: (1) Call the member services number on your child's CHIP card for an in-network directory. (2) Use your CHIP plan's website provider search tool, selecting "Dental" and your location. (3) Call 211 and ask for dental clinics accepting CHIP or Medicaid in your area. (4) Find an FQHC at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov — FQHCs provide dental care and accept CHIP. Always call ahead to confirm a provider accepts CHIP before scheduling.
Finding a Vision Provider
Use your CHIP plan's provider directory (member services or online portal) to find optometrists and ophthalmologists in-network. For eyeglasses, many CHIP plans contract with specific optical retailers — ask your plan which suppliers are covered. FQHCs with vision services are also an option in many areas.
Does CHIP Cover Orthodontia
Orthodontia is covered when medically necessary — typically when a significant malocclusion affects function, not just appearance. Under EPSDT, orthodontia must be provided if identified as medically necessary in a dental screening. If your child's dentist identifies a functional bite problem or significant crowding, request a referral to an orthodontist and ask for an EPSDT medical necessity assessment for coverage. Cosmetic-only orthodontia is generally not covered.
How CHIP Dental Compares to Adult Medicaid Dental
CHIP children's dental is significantly more comprehensive than adult Medicaid dental in most states. Adult Medicaid dental is optional — about 34 states provide it, and even those often cover only emergency or basic preventive care. CHIP dental for children is mandatory, comprehensive, and includes restorative and specialty care. Parents on Medicaid may have limited dental coverage while their children on CHIP have comprehensive dental — one of the more notable coverage asymmetries in the U.S. healthcare safety net.
